The Excitement Express
Learning to manage big excited feelings
Riley bounced up and down like a rubber ball as they walked through the zoo gates. "Lions! Tigers! Elephants!" Riley shouted, spinning in circles. "I want to see EVERYTHING right NOW!"
Mom smiled but looked a little worried. "Riley, I love how excited you are, but remember - we have all day. Let's take our time so we can really enjoy each animal."
But Riley was like a rocket ready to blast off! They ran ahead to the first exhibit, then immediately wanted to rush to the next one. "Come on, come on!" Riley called back. "We're missing everything!"
At the monkey house, Riley pressed their face against the glass, tapping excitedly. "Look! Look! Did you see that? And that? Oh! There's another one!" But in all the excitement, Riley wasn't really seeing anything clearly.
Then something magical happened. An old zookeeper named Sam noticed Riley's excitement and smiled. "I can see you LOVE animals," Sam said kindly. "Want to know a secret about watching them?"
Riley nodded eagerly, still bouncing.
"Animals are like shy friends," Sam explained. "If we're too loud and bouncy, they hide. But if we're calm and patient, they show us amazing things. Want to try the 'Animal Watching Breath'?"
Sam showed Riley how to take three deep breaths, imagining they were a calm, curious animal explorer. "Breathe in the excitement," Sam said, "but breathe out the rushing feeling."
Riley tried it, and something wonderful happened. When they looked at the monkeys again with calm, excited eyes, they saw a baby monkey learning to swing, just like Riley was learning to manage their big feelings!
"I can be excited AND calm at the same time!" Riley realized, watching the animals with new, peaceful attention. The rest of the zoo visit was the best day ever - full of excitement, but also full of really seeing and enjoying each amazing moment.
Think Together:
- • How do you think Riley felt when they were rushing around?
- • What changed when Riley learned the "Animal Watching Breath"?
- • Can you think of a time when you felt very excited about something?
- • How can we enjoy exciting feelings without letting them take over?
